A Malay wedding culture usually begins with the courting process,or merisik (investigations). When a man decides to marry, he will send one or more representatives to the potential bride’s family.This friendly visit is a form of inquiries whether the candidate is available and interested with the match. If both parties are interested, further discussions are made.
This will lead to–>bertunang (engagement).The ceremony is normally held at the bride’s residence.The period of engagement can be days or months,depending on the agreements.Some couple choose to be engaged for few hours only!
Akad nikah (solemnisation) is the most important ceremony in Malay wedding.Basically,akad nikah is not a culture,it is a way to bind your relationship and a must for Muslim couples.One are not considered married if did not go along the ceremony.It can be held at bride’s home or at mosque.

The groom signs the marriage contract and agrees to provide the bride with a mas kahwin (dowry).


The akad nikah ceremony usually is followed by bersanding ceremony which makes it to spread over two days, beginning with the akad nikah and bersanding after that..
During the bersanding ceremony, the bridal couple will be seated on the dais and being sprinkled with yellow rice and scented water by family members, relatives and guests as a sign of blessing. Each guest will receive a bunga telur, which means ‘flower‘ and ‘egg‘ – a symbol of a fertile union.

After the bersanding ceremony, the wedded couple and their guests will attend a celebratory feast called the makan beradab. This involves the bride and groom feeding each other with sweetened rice.
